St. Cecilia Kindergarten

Welcome Back to School, Bulldogs!

Subjects covered in Kindergarten:

Reading Reading is a major focal point in Kindergarten. The children will work on phonics, comprehension, fluency, written expression, vocabulary, hand writing and sight words. These skills will be taught through whole group activities, and individualized guided reading groups.
Math In Kindergarten the children will work on counting, patterns, sorting, and sequencing. Towards the end of the year the children will begin to learn to count money, tell time, add and subtract.
Writing Each week, students will practice their writing during whole group learning and centers. They will practice writing letters, words, and short phrases. Students will be expected to write after being given a prompt, as well as coming up with their own prompts. By the end of the year they will be expected to write 1-3 sentence short stories.
Calendar We start every morning with calendar time. During this time we practice the months of the year and the days of the week. We also use this time to practice counting, patterns, sight words, and weather. Calendar time also includes Morning Message. We practice reading our message, and finding particular letters and sight words. As the year progresses, we will start discussing and finding punctuation as well.
Social Studies Every other week, a new social studies topic will be introduced. Our class will discuss community helpers, our families, maps, and elections/leaders. We will also talk about holidays, and different people and areas around the world
Science Alternating with Social studies, every other week a new science topic will be introduced. The students will perform various experiments, use multiple tools to extend observations, and engage in making predictions, gathering information and drawing conclusions. The topics that will be covered include, but are not limited to, our bodies, the 5 senses, living and non living things, solids vs liquids, sinking vs floating, magnetic properties, sounds and vibrations, and weather/seasons.
